Executive Summary

Rationale

The Indic-Computing Handbook is meant to be a freely available, comprehensive resource on Indian language computing. In order for it to live upto its promise, it needs quality content.

Background Information

Adding content to the Handbook requires skill sets in the following major areas:

• Domain expertise in one of the areas that the Handbook covers. These areas are today grouped into three major groups:
  • Indian language computing standards, and their quirks.
  • Linguistic expertise with the languages of the subcontinent. We are looking for expertise with Indic scripts and with Indic languages.
  • Expertise with the underlying system technology and programming interfaces.
• [Optional] Familiarity with unix based documentation management. This is optional since our project volunteers are willing to work with contributors who would not otherwise have access to Unix documentation tools, to help them get their contribution into our source tree.

Skill Set Required

The basic skills required are the relevant domain expertise (as detailed above) and the willingness to write documentation.

Other resource requirements

Contributors writing about standards will require access to the text of the standards.

Time Estimate

The Handbook as a whole requires a huge amount of contributed effort. However, the effort involved in writing individual chapters would range from a few weeks to a few months of work.
